Inpatient survey results show Liverpool Women’s is performing better than expected

Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust has received its Gynaecology adult inpatients survey results for 2023 and is performing better than expected.

A National Inpatient Survey is conducted each year looking at the experiences of over 63,500 NHS patients. People were eligible to take part in the survey if they stayed in hospital for at least one night during November 2023 and were aged 16 years or over at the time of their stay.

This year, 925 patients from Liverpool Women’s were invited to participate, with 355 responding. The survey covers various aspects of patient care, from admission to discharge and the hospital environment.

There are a range of questions which make up the inpatient survey, designed to mirror the patient journey through the hospital. The survey enables the Trust to compare its current performance against historical results and to benchmark against other NHS organisations. When compared to national NHS results, Liverpool Women’s scored better than the national average in 39 questions.

Patients were asked for feedback about a range of issues and Liverpool Women’s achieved an improved score compared to previous years for questions relating to: How clean was the hospital room or ward that you were in? Did you get enough help from staff to eat your meals? Did you have confidence and trust in the nurses treating you?

The Trust also performed ‘better’ or ‘much better’ compared with all other trusts for questions relating to doctors and nurses answering questions in a way patients could understand, and they felt they had confidence and trust in the doctors and nurses treating them. They also felt there were enough nurses on duty during their stay, and staff involved them in decisions about leaving hospital.

In addition, Liverpool Women’s was one of the top performing Trust’s in the country for patients being treated with kindness and compassion, respect and dignity.

Dianne Brown, Chief Nurse at Liverpool Women's Hospital said: "It’s encouraging to see the Trust is performing’ better than expected’ and a testament to our dedicated staff that many of our patients were treated with kindness and compassion.

We are very proud to once again be among the best performing NHS acute and specialist Trusts in a number of areas covered in the survey, however we are also very conscious of the areas we need to improve in, and the report has highlighted work that needs to be done and we are committed to making those changes.

Thank you once again to those patients who took the time to complete the survey.”
